St. Luke’s House Inc., is a community based Psychiatric Rehabilitation Program, working with adults who are diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness. We are located in Bethesda, MD and our mission is to help people live, learn and work successfully in the community, offering integrated mental health services and community resources. Our award wining Back to Work Program helps people with a mental illness to choose, find and keep a job. Its individualized service has helped thousands of individuals successfully return back to work. If you are interested in psychiatric vocational counseling and becoming a Supported Employment Specialist, you would be given the following responsibilities:
Work with approximately 16-18 clients who are diagnosed with a serious and persistent mental illness.
Job Choice: The supported employment specialist will assist individuals in identifying careers which match their abilities, interests and past employment experiences.
Job Development: The employment specialist will identify the individuals’ strengths in the area of job search and support clients in the following areas such as: resume and cover letter writing, interview presentation, accessing community resources for their job search and how to disclose their disability to potential employers. The employment specialist will work closely with each candidate to successfully match each person to an appropriate job.
The supported employment specialist will work with the business community, marketing the Back to Work Program, determining employment needs within the community and being a liaison between the employer and the client.
Job Placement: The supported employment specialist will assess the clients’ individual strengths with maintaining employment and determine where psychiatric vocational support services will be necessary. The employment specialist will provide on-the-job support to the individual and provide technical assistance to employers, promoting job acquisition, skill development and job independence.
Follow along services: The supported employment specialist will continue to provide psychiatric vocational support services for as long as is necessary
To qualify for this position you need to have a bachelor’s degree in psychology or in a related field such as; social work, vocational rehabilitation, sociology or family studies. Candidates need to have full access to a vehicle, with no more than 2 points on your driving record, as you will need to use your own vehicle for work. You must be willing to work some evenings and weekends, meeting with clients at work, in the community or in their home. Work hours may vary, allowing for a flexible schedule.
