Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a fee to hire one of your candidates? No.

What types of candidates do you have? Our candidate pool includes individuals with a wide variety of education and experience. Some have degrees and years of experience, some have just a few months or a few years work experience, and many of our students are looking for their very first job. We will present you with a candidate who is qualified for the position you wish to fill.

As an employer interested in hiring someone from St. Luke’s House, I am concerned that I may not have the resources and time to train this candidate. What assistance can I expect from your program? Our program provides professional staff that is qualified to provide assistance and support. The services of a Job Coach are available to you and your new employee.

What is a Job Coach? A Job Coach is an employment training specialist who assists in training your new employee at your job site. The Job Coach provides whatever training that is needed to assist the worker to learn the tasks of the job to your specifications. The Job Coach will also facilitate good working relationships between the new employee and his or her coworkers.

Is there a charge for the services of the Job Coach? No.

How long will the Job Coach work with my new employee? This depends upon the employee, their level of experience, confidence in the work setting, and your specifications. A Job Coach may not be needed at all or he or she may work with the new employee as much as full time for the first few days. The Job Coach will only stay as long as needed and will begin to “fade out” or leave the work site as the employee becomes acclimated and competent in the job. The Job Coach is available to you on an ongoing basis for consultation, retraining, or training on new tasks.

Can I hire, promote, discipline, and fire this person just as I would any other employee? Yes. You should have the same expectations and apply the same codes of discipline for this employee as you would for any of your other employees.

How does hiring someone from St Luke’s House help? Candidates who become employed experience a tremendous amount of pride and personal satisfaction by contributing to and working in their community. Over time, they become more self-reliant and healthy and use services less, thereby saving taxpayer dollars and contributing to the economic vibrancy of the region.

Are there any financial incentives available for hiring someone from St. Luke’s House? Yes. There is the Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) which provides a tax credit of up to 40% of the newly hired employee’s first 400 hours of wages up to $2400. There is also a Maryland tax credit worth up to $1700. The majority of our candidates qualify for both of these tax credits.
